Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea was the talk of Twitter on Wednesday evening after his manager’s interesting comments.
After the Red Devils’ goalless draw with Southampton at St Mary’s, Jose Mourinho was asked about De Gea’s absence from the squad.
Sergio Romero was preferred to the number one shot-stopper, and it seems that the Spaniard may not play again for United this season.
United will face Crystal Palace on the final day of the Premier League season this Sunday before going head to head with Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm next Wednesday.
Mourinho has no plans to use De Gea in either game, but he has insisted that he wants the 26-year-old to stay amid rumours of a Real Madrid switch.
When asked when De Gea would feature on the pitch again, Mourinho told Sky Sports:
“I think the first match in pre-season against Los Angeles. I hope to play Joel against Crystal Palace. I hope to play Sergio in the final. Hopefully we don’t have problems with these two keepers. But David is top in the world and obviously we want to keep the top in the world.”
It seems as though the goalkeeper’s link to the Bernabeu will never disappear, and despite Mourinho claiming that he expects his player to be at the club next season, some fans are unsure.
