Wilfried Zaha was quiet as Crystal Palace drew 1-1 with Southampton on Saturday.
On the chalkboard
The former Manchester United winger thought he had registered an assist in the first-half, dropping his shoulder and finding space before sending a cross into Max Meyer, who slammed the ball into the back of the net.
A VAR intervention, though, chalked the goal off, with Zaha adjudged to have strayed offside.
And that is largely where his influence ended.
Zaha, per WhoScored, had 48 touches of the ball on the left flank and did not manage to have a shot on goal.
While the Ivory Coast international did lay on one key pass, he had a pass success rate of just 68%, while he also completed just half of the dribbles he attempted and was dispossessed on four occasions.
This was a frustrating performance from the 27-year-old.
Did he really play for us?! No Palace fan has managed to name all of these obscure Eagles signings….
Head dropped
It appeared as though Zaha was left rightly frustrated by the intervention of VAR.
Replays showed that the decision was as tight as could be – allowing Meyer’s goal would hardly have been a clear and obvious error – but still, the best players pick themselves up and go again.
He did not manage to do that, regularly running into cul-de-sacs and having the ball pinched off his toes.
Of course, tricky wingers are more likely to have poor dribbling statistics – they will attempt so many, they are likely to lose the ball every now and then.
But the numbers point to the fact that Zaha was simply unable to properly affect the game in the final third.
Without the Ivorian at his best, Palace could not turn one point into three.
Meanwhile, Palace fans have hailed one man!
